Tank Locating
Tank locating can be done in a couple different ways. Probing with a long metal rod, to find the corners of the tank and field works if it isn’t too deep, or the ground isn’t frozen. Otherwise, we can use a flushable locator that we send down the toilet and follow it with our hand held device, out to the tank.
Inspections
Inspections are normally performed for Real Estate Transfers. A standard home inpection normally does not include the homes septic system. Very few home inspectors offer a complete septic inspection. Therefore, you may want to have a septic tank company pump and inspect the system as part of your inspection of the property. Alpena Septic Service is nationally certified to perform inspections of onsite wastewater treatment systems; otherwise known as your homes septic system.
Our inspections are performed onsite with information from the original septic permit which helps to conduct our inspection as thoroughly as possible; this is important information for us and the new homeowner. Inspections will include an in depth look at the system from the house to the drainfield. The tank is always pumped at this time, because we inspect the tank as well.
Residential
Residential septic systems are relatively the same as commercial, but just on a smaller scale. Septic systems are a type of onsite sewage facility. In the United States, approximately 25% of the population depend on their own septic systems. A typical septic system has four main components: a pipe from the home, a septic tank, a drainfield, and the soil.
When a residential septic system fails, the cost of the repairs and environmental cleanup can be very expensive. That is why it is important that the system is correctly installed, serviced and maintained.
Commercial
Commercial septic systems are designed to handle a larger waste stream than residential ones. Its important that these systems can handle the large amount of waste that commercial buildings produce. They also must be to handle a larger variety of waste. In some states, a business that deals with food require grease traps that allow the grease and oils to settle out before the waste reaches the drain field.

Riser Services
Risers are an extension to the septic tank for easier access to cleaning your tank. They come in a variety of sizes.
Filters
Effluent filters trap suspended solids from getting into the drain field, which helps with keeping the drain field working longer. We install filters in all our new septic systems. This may be some thing you may want in your tank. They are placed in the outlet baffle.
Lift Pump
A sewage lift pump system allows sewage to be moved onto higher levels of land, as opposed to the typical gravity system that moves sewage from high to low elevations.
Line Repair & Replacement
Make sure to replace your old lines with new pipes. Replace old cast iron pipe with new SCH 40 pipe and install a clean out for easy access to the line. It is also useful to occasionally replace the line going to the drain field as they can get crushed or become clogged.
We recommend your septic tank be pumped out no more then every two to three years. Even if the system appears to be working well, sludge may have built up to the point where waste water is released without sufficient time in the tank for treatment and settling of particles. This situation may result in pollution of groundwater or cause eventual clogging of the drain field.
If you get a wet area or standing water that occurs above the drain field it can be caused by sludge particles that are clogging the drain field. Tree roots or broken pipes may keep the waste water from dispersing through the entire drain field. When the water use in the house regularly exceeds the capacity of the system standing water my occur. Waste water does not move through the soil as it should and instead rises to the surface and can create serious health risk and odor problems.
Toilets may run slowly or backup. In some cases the basement, or crawl space may flood with sewage. This can be cause my many factors like, plugged lines to the tank, a plugged inlet or outlet pipe, a full septic tank, or a failed drain field. If this happens then septic odors occur in the house, above the tank and drain field, or escape from the vent pipe. If the system is operating properly, there should be no odors. Odors can be an early warning sign that the system is failing.
Jetting sewer line
Our company can hot water jet a blocked sewer line that is full of grease. We pump water at 190 degrees to clear all grease from the line.
